State of the Pups!

Palamedes Sextus

Paaaaaaalllll! My precious new cinnamon roll nerd child! He’s been in Darrow barely two months, and oh man have they been busy. In the first month alone, he made some excellent friends and developed a budding crush on Marianne Sherridan that he does not know what to do with. Given the intensity of his feelings for Dulcinea on the one hand, and the Sixth House’s aggressively practical (and quasi-eugenic) approach to procreation on the other, he doesn’t have a lot of perspective on what he’s supposed to do when he just, like, enjoys spending time with someone he’s attracted to. At some point he will figure out enough that they will start dating, and he’s going to be weird and adorable about it—and very likely a bit of a disaster, too.

On top of all that, he’s super intensely interested in 1) figuring out the limits of his necromancy in a thalergenic environment and 2) figuring out WTF is up with Darrow. He’s obviously never going to find concrete answers, but he’ll be continually chasing theories and building a body of evidence. Like Faye put it, it’s sort of like being an expert in string theory—there’s a lot of math and conceptually sound ideas holding it all together, but there’s never going to be any proof.

AND THEN, just in the last week, both Harrow and and Cam showed up in quick succession, and he is just ecstatic about it. I mean, he’s particularly excited/relieved/just so goddamn HAPPY to have his cavalier and BFF back, but he’s also really pleased to have his necromancer buddy even if she won’t admit they’re friends. Pal and Cam are pretty close even by necro/cav standards, and now that they’ve gotten each other back, they’re going to be pretty much inseparable for a while. So if your pup sees Pal regularly, they’ll likely start seeing Cam with him, too. XD

With all of it, the kid’s a li’l bit overwhelmed, honestly, but in a cute way. I’ve got some Future Ideas for him, but I also just want to give him some time to breathe and figure shit out.

June Plot: Given that Pal is 1) a genuinely kind and helpful person on the one hand and 2) actually very good at bureaucratic administration stuff on the other, I’m honestly thinking that he might set up (or help someone else set up!) some kind of mutual aid scheme. His instinct will definitely be to find out the best way for those left in Darrow to pool resources and redistribute them in some regulated form. I’d LOVE to coordinate with folks who have pups who’d also be interested in that kind of thing, or at the very least, have a gathering post where he’s set up a sort of…donation and distribution station somewhere. Unless someone else is already planning something along these lines, in which case I/he will just piggyback on that.

ETA: OMG I ALMOST FORGOT AND CAITLIN HAD TO REMIND ME. When all the NPCs are gone, Pal and Darlington are going to BREAK INTO THE DARROW MUSEUM. The goal will be to find out what's in the mysterious Darrow History exhibit, but Danny is going to break his leg and they will never make it in.

 

Sam Vimes

Poor man, he's having a rough time of it. May 25th is always hard, but this year he's really mourning the loss of his family as well as all the losses he usually associates with the Glorious 25th of May. Other than his EP (which is still open!), I've been kind of neglectful of him since Pal took up residence in my brain, but he's been keeping pretty busy in the background. He's still investigating corruption in the DPD, and it's become clear enough to his superiors that they're just...quietly punishing him by giving him crappy assignments that no one wants. On the one hand, he's definitely enjoying the 'you're know you're doing the right thing when you start pissing people off' thrill of it, but on the other hand, he'd like to go back to solving real crime instead of, like, being sent to deal with noise complaints and suchlike. John Reese's disappearance also set him back, since they were working on it together. Sometime this summer I do want to move that plot along, so I need to do some thinking about that. I have some ideas for the arc of it, but I need to check with various people about it first.

June Plot: Honestly, he's gonna love this. I mean, he's going to be Angry As Hell and also Very Very Tired, but he's also likely going to end up wrangling whatever police officers and emergency personnel are left. While he isn't going to have any real power, it's the closest he will have been to In Change of Stuff in a while. And he misses that! I'm definitely interested in doing some threads with DPD/emergency personnel left behind, probably as a mini-gathering post kind of thing, if folks would be into that. HMU, muns of competent pups!

Hopefully you still want to do the June plot idea I have for Danny, but even if you don't we should obviously thread them in some kind of shenanigans while the city is abandoned? ALSO Rosie is 100% here to help with any kind of mutual aid stuff if you're able to get a gathering post up or something, yaaaay

Oh my god, thank you for posting this because I was just catching up (which I shouldn't be right now - I'm minding the email box for work while everyone's off and I have NOT caught up) and I ...remembered I forgot to do this for my pups, and meant to.

Pal: Aah, I'm so pleased about EVERYTHING~. I've been neglecting my others a bit while we thread them (which doesn't say much about how much I've been tagging, lol, but) but I just. Ugh. I love them. I am always very nervous I'm going to screw up their dynamic because I care so much about it and then it's just - butter. I'm having so much fun. ANYWAY.

He's going to have to introduce Cam to Marianne, or at least they'll have to meet somehow -- she's smart enough to pick up on him being FOND, and normally would go ahead and just introduce herself, but I don't think Cam knows DARROW well enough and she can't just say she's Pal's cavalier and have anyone know what the fuck that implies or why he has a cavalier, which is very strange to her.

ALSO: Please feel free to godmod Cam being with him basically anywhere? I feel like she'd be even more hesitant to let him out of her sight than usual, so even if she's just ...you know, *idle animation* she can be wherever. (Although to go running was a great excuse in that thread with Marianne: I could just see the "are you joking" look. I'm just imagining her and Darlington picking up jogging together and Pal like "WELL FUCK now I WANT to come along" and them pausing at the end of every block while he tries valiantly not to die.) I feel like I need to announce this a little, like, HEY CAM IS PROBABLY CONSPICUOUSLY, POSSIBLY WEIRDLY PRESENT.

Non-Cam related: Blue is actually a GREAT match for mutual aid, if he'd like her help? Actually, tbh ALL of mine are really pro that idea (except Luke, who just, you know, thinks it's good), though Eponine is likely to fall back into survival behavior at first: she'd still be very endeared to it. But I'd like to have Blue do more with activism and PC-run politics, and mutual aid is a great jumping off point.

This is so long, I'm so sorry, you wrote a lot of good things! And yet somehow my response is longer than your post. ANYWAY:
Vimes: I already told you I want to tag him with Grantaire (man, their barricades are so close together, oof), but I do like them as friends eventually. I also really like him and Blue (again, Blue!) even though my first attempt with her fell kind of flat due to brain worms; I think in the real world she'd be very Police Reform so them investigating corruption might be something that makes them cross paths. (I may hit you up separately about this.)

I have...zero competent pups in terms of actual emergency personnel and not just People Who Can Tend Wounds, but R and Eponine both have the ability to do that and would volunteer in a pinch. Oh! You might want to hit up Scott, though, I know he keeps talking about having Ellie do firefighter things and this might be a good opportunity for her to break in, given that....we have no played characters on the fire squad.

Padmé's definitely going to be trying to coordinate mutual aid stuff on top of trying to make sure the vigilante types wind up where they're needed instead of just wandering around at random and also not sleeping at all, so frankly she would love to run into Palamedes doing more or less the same thing and join forces. Two bureaucracy nerds are better than one, and all that. (Also, I do still want to thread her and Vimes being Busy and Competent and Very Tired together, which I could either do at your mini-gathering post or on the semi-private EP that I think she's going to get at some point during all this.)

Also, I'm having boatloads of fun threading Pal and Lup, and definitely want more of them! He reminds her a lot of her Boyfriend Who Is Not Here, which is super fun and not at all upsetting for her, it's chill, she's so chill, but also that means I think they could be delightful friends.
